In The Atelier With Andraya Farrag

BEDOUINStudioDubai

We love supporting home grown talent, so, as you can imagine, we jumped at the chance to pick the brains of one of the Middle East’s most popular designers. The Luxury Closet sits down to meet the brains behind Bedouin.

Tell us a bit about your background and how you got into fashion?

I have always been fascinated by art and fashion. My mother is a painter and my grandfather was also an artist, so I have always been surrounded by creativity. I studied at Central Saint Martins and graduated with First class BA (hons) in Fashion Design and Marketing in 2012. My graduate collection was one of the few to be selected for the renowned Central Saint Martins Press Show, which was amazing. I have worked with a wide breadth of brands; from commercial to luxury, including the likes of Marchesa, Matthew Williamson and Edun where the fantastic experience and knowledge I gained has helped me start my own brand: BEDOUIN.

What is the concept behind ‘BEDOUIN’?

BEDOUIN’s less is more approach is shaped by the beautiful nomadic existence of the Bedouin tribes. Taking note of the Bedouin lifestyle each collection is versatile, easy to wear and geared towards the jetsetter. Our contemporary clean designs allow the pieces to stand the test of time and can interpreted into any wardrobe.

What was the inspiration behind your SS15 collection?

BEDOUINStudiosDubai4The SS15 collection was inspired by the 1958 classic, South Pacific. I love vintage style so I took a lot of inspiration from vintage gems that I found in London and modernized them with clean pastel silks. As with all of our collections contrast is a vital ingredient. Here we have combined feminine fabrics with urban silhouettes and a monochrome colour palette with a tropical bamboo print. Island life and a sense of freedom is a running theme especially with our Fringe dress.

How would you describe your own personal style?

My typical style is contemporary, loose fit pieces with lots of monochrome.

Who are your favourite designers?

My go-to brands are Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, Acne, &Other Stories, and COS. I do tend to wear the BEDOUIN pieces often too!

Any style icons?

Olivia Palermo

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?
Right now it has to be my Tide Top from our SS15 collection. I literally cant stop wearing it so have had to make a few in extra colours!

Favourite trends for SS15?

BEDOUINStudiosDubai11

Loving Fringe, Normcore and the odd contemporary print.

Any fashion faux pas you wish people would stop doing? What trends are you loving for SS15?

Wearing shoes you can’t walk in. They may be the most beautiful shoes in the world – but if you can’t walk in them then it ruins your whole outfit.
