Watches at Sea: Top 3 Yachting Companions

Whether you’re taking to the seven seas or sailing the French Riviera, you need to do it in true superstar style, aboard a sumptuous yacht, world-class amenities, first-class service, and high quality paraphernalia, like timepieces.

We rounded up the top 3 watches that deliver equal amounts of precision, craftsmanship and glamour.

Designed by the great Gerald Genta (known also for the iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Phillippe Nautilus) the IWC Yacht Club was one of IWCs top sellers in the 1970s. The new model, launched in 2010, features an in-house movement (the IWC 89360), a flyback chronograph function and a 68-hour reserve. It is available in steel and rose gold. With a slick dial design, a rubber strap for extra toughness, and increased water resistance (6 bars or approx. 60m), this watch is a winner. Price $14k – $26k

First launched in 2007, the Rolex Yachtmaster II was designed to meet the needs of professional sailors. While it may look like a normal chronograph, the cal 4160 is actually the first complication built with a programmable countdown and mechanical memory (patented by Rolex). The timer can be adjusted on the fly as you sync with the official regatta timer. And at 44mm, this is the largest Rolex model, making it very easy to read. Previously only available in gold and gold/steel combinations, Rolex launched an all-steel version at Basel 2013 to the delight of many watch and sailing enthusiasts. Price $16,500 to $48,000

Richard Mille is known for using the best technology available: light-weight materials, amazing architectural design and handmade finishing to its watches. This naturally limits the number of watches that can be produced, increasing the exclusivity of their timepieces. As the official timekeeper of the Perini Navi Cup, one of the finest regattas in the world, the RM 015 is among the finest designed and most cutting edge pieces in the world. The tonneau shaped case and movement need to be seen up close to be appreciated. A torque indicator is positioned between 2 and 4 o’clock to measure the tension in the mainspring to ensure accuracy. To set or wind the watch, there is a push-bottom which allows you to select a ‘gear’. A skeleton dial allows you to appreciate the movement in all its beauty. An amazing piece of engineering excellence and at $435,000 for the platinum model, the RM 015 is as exclusive as it gets.
