Known to many as ‘Coco’ or ‘Chanel’, the designer’s real name was actually Gabrielle Bonheur

  5. At 12 years old, Chanel’s father left her and her sisters in an orphanage after the passing of their mother.
  6. The building where her apartment is in Paris, 31 Rue Cambon, was bought by Chanel in 1920
  7. It has been left intact since her death
  8. It still houses the ground-floor shop, the haute couture workrooms in the attic (where 100 seamstresses still work entirely by hand), and what is now Karl Lagerfeld’s study
  9. Very few, however, have had the honour of actually stepping into the private apartment
  10. One of the few lucky ones happens to be artist and Fifty Shades of Grey director, Sam Taylor-Johnson. He was asked to photograph the interiors of the fashion house founder’s home.
