Bag Thursday: Direct From Dubai

Karl Lagerfeld took Chanel’s 2015 Cruise collection to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A celeb-studded front row and a collection which boasted Aladdin-style slippers, traditional Islamic fretwork, slouchy pants, kaftans, conservative silhouettes, half-moon diadems and, of course, the ‘Dubai By Night’ Gas Can Evening Bag, all crossbred with Chanel’s signatures, from interlocking CCs to clusters of beading and decaying tweeds and patchworks. “There was a fashion for wearing moon-shaped jewels in the 1850s and 60s,” noted Lagerfeld, adding, “and of course, the half-moon is like a C—one half of the Chanel double C!”

Chanel set the precedent that resort is a time for jet-setting, so it comes as no surprise this collection was show in one of the most transient cities in the world. “The world is not that big anymore,” Lagerfeld said of the collection. “You don’t have to be from here. These clothes are for women all over the world.” And so, the Chanel Jerry Can Bag was born – a gasoline can-shaped handbag, which made its debut in both plexiglass and quilted fashion.
