Five Popular Celine Bags Designed by Phoebe Philo

On July 12, 2021, Phoebe Philo announced her return, three-and-a-half years after her exit from Celine, with the news of the launch of her eponymous label. And we are already over the moon!

She is hailed as one of the most prolific designers of this time and is credited with introducing trends that have now become the Holy verses of the fashion bible. After six outstanding years as Chloé’s creative director (2001-06), she joined forces with the French luxury house, Celine, in 2008. Her debut collection was a beautiful manifestation of minimalism and subtle, mature sensibilities with a restrained color palette, simple yet impactful creations, and memorable wedge heels. And with that, she laid the foundation of a design aesthetic that was celebrated throughout her 10-year tenure and even more after her exit, with expressions such as Philophile and #oldceline becoming the buzzwords.

From the scarf-print shirt that became one of the most copied styles to the frenzy-creating fur shoes, elegance-evincing camel coat, and the norm-breaking campaign featuring Joan Didion, Phoebe Philo gave us so many iconic creations and fashion moments when she was the creative director at Celine

However, being the handbag aficionados we are, we have picked five popular Celine bags designed under Philo’s directorship to demonstrate how much of a true genius she was!

The Luggage Tote

Undoubtedly the biggest star amongst all the Celine bags and one of the most popular handbags of all time, the Luggage tote is an icon. It was Phoebe Philo’s first It bag, released in the house’s Spring 2010 collection.

With its distinctive front face adorned with a zipper and availability in a profusion of colors and materials, it is not hard to decipher why the Celine Luggage tote, even after a decade of its launch, still appeals to fashion connoisseurs of all ages and tastes. To tap the season’s bold aesthetics, pick the tricolored ones in exotic python or snakeskin.

The Trapeze Bag

In contrast to the Luggage tote, Trapeze feels relatively minimal and elegant with no bold details. It was introduced in 2010 and became an instant success with a series of A-list celebrities elevating their streetstyle with this daytime staple. It was a classic addition by Phoebe Philo to the brand’s heritage.

The bag exudes feminine sophistication with a top handle silhouette, wide wings on the sides, and a front flap. The understated appeal, chic metal accents, and ergonomic interiors make it extra special. Although this Celine bag has now been discontinued, its popularity has gleefully not. The Luxury Closet carries a multitude of beautiful Celine Trapeze bags in a wide range of sizes, colors, and materials.

The Box Bag

The Box bag is another stunning creation by Phoebe Philo. Debuted in 2011, the Box bag has a contemporary aesthetic and a certain magnificence about it. The look of the bag breathes charm, made from the highest quality materials and tied together elegantly with subtle details.

One of the most adorable Celine bags, the Box bag is fashioned in a classic flap style with a streamlined, structured silhouette and an adjustable strap worn both over the shoulder and crossbody. This style will make an excellent handbag for off-duty looks. However, it can also transition effortlessly to work settings.

The Belt Bag

The minimalist aesthetic of Celine bags by Phoebe Philo continues with the graceful Belt bag. Launched in the Pre-Fall 2014 collection, it has a casual vibe along with a sense of refinement, which makes it versatile enough to carry both for work and play. The bag is characterized by a belt with knots on both ends and the front flap made to be tucked under it. The relaxed shape and the spacious interior add their unique touch to the complete design. It is complete delicately with a top handle and an optional shoulder strap.

The Trio Bag

For a crossbody bag, the Trio Celine bag is as elegant as it can get! It was released in 2011 and is loved for its functional construction—it comes with three separated zipped compartments. The overall appeal is subtle, with a simple rectangular shape and minimal branding on the front. Unlike many Celine bags, the Trio comes only in two sizes: small and large. It is the perfect bag for all kinds of occasions, and even though it looks compact, it can hold more than just essentials!

Although new Celine bags like Triomphe and 16 are rapidly becoming wardrobe staples, handbags designed during Phoebe Philo’s term carry an old-world charm that is inimitable. With the launch of her new label, which is rumored to debut in 2022, philophiles are already looking forward to witnessing a change in the fashion landscape currently dominated by a ‘more is more’ philosophy hurled by mega fashion brands.

As for us, right now we are only celebrating the return of an icon—Phoebe Philo—by treating ourselves to investment-worthy creations designed by her. Yes, you can join us too! Explore new and preloved Celine bags and more here
