Bag of the Week: Balenciaga Hourglass Bag

It is worth wondering that when one thinks of Balenciaga, the words that come to our minds are trendy or bold, and yet the label churns out pieces that are nothing less than iconic. Employing flawless craftsmanship then displaying it via creations that are contemporary — is a quality that creative director, Demna Gvasalia has aced. To illustrate that, our Bag of the Week series brings you the stunning Balenciaga Hourglass bag.

It is Demna Gvasalia who broached his streetwear sensibilities into Balenciaga with such great impetus that ‘streetwear’ became a buzzword in the beau monde and other brands prepared themselves to catch up with the trend. On his arrival, the designer bombarded the apparel, shoes, and bags with bold logos and everyone just nodded in approval while the creations flew off the shelves. However, in the Fall/Winter 2019 collection, Gvasalia steered the direction to sleeker and cleaner lines as he introduced the Balenciaga Hourglass bag.

An Homage to Cristobal Balenciaga’s Legacy

“A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for color, a musician for harmony, and a philosopher for temperance.”

-Cristobal Balenciaga

It is the hourglass silhouette, championed by the couturier himself that reflects the label’s heritage — starting from the aggrandized shoulders and a nipped waistline to the puffed-out hips, the unmistakable figure still remains synonymous with the Maison. The Balenciaga Hourglass bag honors the Spanish designer’s legacy by adapting his iconic tailoring codes. It is the bag’s curvilinear shape that sets it apart! The sleek quadrangular outline is conscientiously orchestrated by arching an inverted crescent bottom that creates all the difference in making the Hourglass an instantly recognizable piece. The one and only element we witness in the name of the logo is the front flap elevated by the House’s signature B accent. The style comes in three sizes — medium, small, xs and is draped in an array of materials like exotic skin, prime quality leather, and canvases popped with high-octane hues.

It only takes one look to recognize this stunner! The meticulously carved out bottom of the Balenciaga Hourglass bag harks back to the Basque-waist bottom of the label’s hero silhouette. The trapezoid structure and the cut-out detail on the ends of the top handle, add a contemporary twist, creating a subtle balance between modern and classic. The expanse of the bag is swathed with mirrored croc-embossed leather — a texture that is certainly having a fashion moment!
