Bag of the Week: The Gucci Bamboo 1947 Bag

Alessandro Michele once again opens Gucci’s longstanding archival treasures to introduce to the world another pièce de résistance—the Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag. Through its balanced design and shape, this new handbag presents an illustrative blend of traditional brand motifs and Gucci’s never-aging vision. Just like the Gucci Diana, in this handbag too, Alessandro plays around with the label’s favorite Bamboo accent, hence creating a mixture of vintage and modern styles like never before.

If we take a dive into the brand’s invention of handbags, each of them individually has gone on to create profound history in the luxury industry. Whether it is the Jackie 1961, the Gucci Marmont, or the Dionysus, Gucci bags instantly strike a chord between fashion and functionality—an essential handbag characteristic that is rare to obtain.

The History of the Bamboo

With its latest finds, Gucci comes up with more resourceful and more refined ways of incorporating its signature elements into action. Back in the atrocious phase of Post World War two, when the world was immersed in rebuilding fallen economies, Guccio Gucci and a few Florentine artisans created a magnificent House motif—the Bamboo—one that was about to become the new historic emblem of the Maison.

Depletion of traditional materials like leather led the House to use this purely organic and lightweight Bamboo as the handle of their new handbags. Even though this new motif seemed peculiar to the fashion world, gradually, it became iconic in design and marked itself as the symbol of Gucci’s evolution and creative innovation.

It was the celebration of Gucci’s 100th year, and with Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci film awaiting big screens, Alessandro used the runway as the perfect playground to conceptualize Gucci’s equestrian codes into classic inventive offerings.

The Fall/Winter 2021 collection witnessed a collaboration between Alessandro’s iconoclastic visions and people’s current expectations. And among these magnificent designs of studded minaudières and padded jackets, one thing that graced the hands of many models was the Bamboo 1947 bag.

Like most Gucci bags, the Bamboo 1947 also paints a vivid story of the House’s past. Every corner of this bag reflects Gucci’s fine precision that is put together by using instantly-recognizable accents and antique hardware. By bringing in vibrant hues of leather, exotic skins, etc., for the exterior, Gucci extends its color palette. The placement of the Bamboo lock on the flap draws instant attention to this simplistic silhouette, and the emblematic Bamboo handle perched atop this demure bag acts as a cherry on top of the cake! Additionally, the bag is provided with two detachable shoulder straps.

The Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag is available in three different sizesmedium, small, and mini. In some variations, a Web trim is infused on the shoulder strap to add a more signatory touch.

Over its centennial history, Gucci has always given its audience a creative platform to express their choices and embrace more unconventional trends in fashion. In line with the same, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag mirrors the brand’s heritage and helps us all celebrate the House of Gucci’s remarkable and perpetual fashion timeline.
